Does Object Size Matter with Regard to the Mental Simulation of Object Orientation?

Sau-Chin Chen, Bjorn de Koning, & Rolf Zwaan

Description

Below we present the materials and scripts described in the paper above. Two verification tasks (sentence-picture and picture-picture) were conducted in one experimental flow. Each language group ran the respective experimental flow, and the materials for each language group were embedded in the task scripts .

Background

The procedure of sentence-picture verification task originated from Zwaan and Pecher (2012). That they found a significant but small orientation effect (d = 0.1). Picture-picture verification task was the simplified version of Cohen and Kubovy (1993). The sentence-picture naming was the modified version of Zwaan, Stanfield, and Yaxley, (2002)

Experimental Procedure: Verification tasks

Built with Experiment

This experiment combined sentence-picture verification task and picture-picture verification task. In our study, we created the four flows for each language group. Participants have the second chance when they failed to pass the practice trials at the beginning. Otherwise they returned the entry website. Intermedian task served the instructions between blocks. Note: This demo is Chinese version. The left alignment of sentence could be invalid because of the system updating or browser issue.

Experimental Procedure: Naming task

Built with Experiment

This experiment operated sentence-picture naming task. In our study, we created the two flows for each language group. Participants entered the experiment after 6 practice trials. All the instructions were complied in the task sheets. Note: This demo is Chinese version. The left alignment of sentence could be invalid because of the system updating or browser issue.

Intermedian slides in verifcation

Built with Task Builder 1

This task presented the instructions of verification tasks. In consideration of the three particular languages we tested, we distinguished the sheets for instructions which could reduce the mistakes happened in the experimental trails.

Picture-Picture Verification: Script and Materials

Built with Task Builder 1

This task contained the object pictures and sheets of experimental trials. The object pictures were used in the sentence-picture verification task, the picture-picture verification task, and the sentence-picture naming task..

Sentence-Picture Verification: Script and Materials

Built with Task Builder 1

This task contained the object pictures and sheets of probe sentences. Every language group have two sheets for the counter-balanced randomization. The object pictures were used in the sentence-picture verification task, the picture-picture verification task, and the sentence-picture naming task.
